But Will Wal-Mart Wipe Your Ass for You?

Google has announced their new advisory group on health. And the big news in the blogosphere is that no nurses have been included. Apparently, mental health workers and medical librarians were also excluded. Who was included?

Linda M. Dillman, Executive Vice President, Risk Management, Benefits and Sustainability, Wal-Mart

That job title sounds less like someone who can help me with my health concerns and more like someone who can keep me from having enough hours to qualify for my medical coverage. Apparently, she is some sort of IT rockstar. She has a degree in business administration. Frankly I don't know anything about her that I haven't read in the last 10 minutes. I just feel that if there is room for her on this board then there is room for a nurse (or a medical librarian, or a psychologist.)

No nurses?! No nurse practitioners?! What a useless flippin' advisory board! I'd rather take my advice from a nurse than a doc nine times out of ten. Of, course I may be a bit biased because I am a nurse.
Het, did Mr. I love Smoking ever reply?

No, no he didn't! And I can tell from my site meter that he has stopped by -- just like I can tell from my site meter that you have a really long commute to work!

I'm sure that she will have fine advice on how to manage your health after your employer denies you health coverage. That is exactly the type of risk management that 40 million Americans need, so I don't understand your point.

Happy 4th of July. Sigh.

Actually, Suzanne, it does seem as if she has some good ideas...

I'm a new nurse and sometimes I wondered if all the stuff they told us in nursing school was hooey--that the public doesn't really get what we do.

After two weeks on the floor, I realize most of the time, it's absolutely true. The docs get all the glory (at least in the news stories I've seen in the last two weeks) and there's never any mention of nurses.

The thank you notes on our unit, available for all to see, are much different. 90% of them thank the nurses more than any other healthcare professional.

The mainstream media just are not talking to many nurses to get their perspective.

In reference to the comment about the public not knowing what we do, we need to unite and be sure what we do is publicized. We are all doing so with our blogs and comments. I think a strong front will help to get the message across. Keep publicizing the image of nursing in a positive way.
I'll tell you from my own personal experience, that, when I went into Home Care over 11 years ago, I really had no idea what home care nurses did. We must continue to learn about our profession and support our colleagues as they practice in their niche.

:) Have a great holiday
